Does PNG or BMP have a higher quality? Is it true that Paint's default will be PNG now instead of bitmap? If so, I might as well get a head start and start converting my thousands of bitmaps over to PNGs (if you think this would be a wise choice), as I would prefer to either have one or the other. Also, I heard that there would be a few new features in Paint. Can you still right click, go to new, then New Bitmap Image or has that been replaced with PNG Image or the like? Someone said in a different post that you can now crop. I thought you could already do that. Are there any other new features I should know about? I use Paint frequently, occasionally using other software (such as Picture It) to produce higher quality images or effects without doing everything pixel by pixel. Thanks.

PNG
So far I have not seen any differences except for the new Save/Open dialogue and the default PNG format. I would say for web graphics, PNG is better and it maintains transparency, so if you work in Photoshop its a great format for maintaining the the fidelity of your images. BMP is mostly for high resolution and more pixels, file size is much larger but the image is not washed out. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm "Travis King" wrote in message

The general rule of thumb, as Andre says: The PNG is exactly the same as the BMP except you can get transparency and the end file is dramatically smaller than what the BMP would be. This is probably why their using the PNG as default from now on.

PNG is a lossless compression format for bitmap images, that supports a number of features the BMP format doesn't (like transparency).
If you have a choice between BMP and PNG, and all the applications you need to use support both, go for PNG. You'll lose nothing but disk consumption.

upgraded to 1024x768 for most of my Paint items.
